Tourists began coming to the East Cape in the early 1950’s when Rancho Buena Vista Hotel built an airstrip in the arroyo near the hotel. Hollywood stars made it a vacation destination most popular for sport fishing. Fishing was great, the beaches were deserted and the weather was fabulous. The area continues to grow to this day but at much slower pace than the more well known areas of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. You often hear people say the East Cape is how Cabo “used to be” 20 years ago.
With most areas completely “off the grid”, East Cape living is definitely a more laid back lifestyle. Great surfing can be found at Shipwrecks, Nine Palms and Vinoramas. Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is located about 15 miles south of La Ribera. Millions of tropical fish make this living coral reef their home. The snorkeling and diving here are the best you will find on the Pacific side of the country. Explore the beaches and the desert on an ATV, or windsurf, kite surf, kayak or fish on the Sea of Cortez.
